Duolingo turns language learning into short daily lessons with streaks, leagues and rewards. It covers dozens of languages on the web and in its mobile apps, and the free version is enough to build a solid beginner foundation.
AI plays a bigger role on the Max plan, which adds Video Call, a live spoken conversation with an AI character named Lily, and Roleplay scenarios with feedback. The Explain My Answer feature, once a Max perk, became free for everyone in January 2026. The company was founded in Pittsburgh in 2011.
